Environmental Health Hazards in Tibetan Exiled Communities
Burning of toxic waste and garbage |
In Tibetan refugee settlements, such as Dharamshala, India,
residents face the risk of serious health effects due
to exposure to toxic substances.
Major sources of exposure include internationally banned, 'Persistent Organic Pollutants' (POPs)
such as pesticide, DDT and Dioxin; and 'Heavy Metals' from batteries, leaded petroleum products,
and due to incineration and riverbed dumping of solid and amp; toxic waste. Toxic products are sold
with little or no warning. Plastic and other non-biodegradeable waste
is commonly found clogging open sewage drains and strewn in open areas,
providing a breeding ground for bacteria & disease.
